CNN’s Money website has a great tutorial on money management entitled “A Step by Step Guide to Gaining Control of Your Financial Life”. I’d strongly recommend reviewing the site as a starting point in your financial education:
At some point in time after you master the basics, the temptation of the stock market and active investing is going to come calling. Before you start down this path, I’d recommend that you explore a bit about asset allocation and the use of index funds. “Index Fund Advisors” is an “assets under management” (AUM) firm. They have some wonderful educational material and some of the best charts / summaries of historical trends I have ever seen. If you want to understand the “why” behind using index funds as the basis for your portfolio, this is a great site to review.
If you have invested the time to understand the philosopy behind investing with index funds, you might like to be able to reach out to other like minded individuals. The “Boglehead” forum (after Jack Bogle the founder of Vanguard) is dedicated to discussing concepts related to “do it yourself” investing with index funds.
