Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "dissonance."

Hopefully, the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter along to others who you think would benefit from the content.

Dissonance

Every year, I try and pick a word to guide me through the year. This year it’s discipline. Unfortunately, the word “dissonance” has been pushing its way into my life way too often—and, in the process, pushing aside discipline. However, I’m aware and taking steps to address the intruder!

For me, dissonance occurs in my mind when there is a disconnect between the person I want/aspire to be and the life I am living in the moment. Dissonance occurs when:

  • I don’t exercise on plan.
  • I eat too much.
  • I procrastinate and fail to get things done on time.
  • I act in a manner that is inconsistent with my values.

In each of the above cases—as well as many more—dissonance takes over my mind AFTER I fail to apply discipline to my actions.

Fortunately, life is NOT all or nothing, and I’m able to leverage the discomfort/annoyance of dissonance to make small modifications to my behaviors. Do these modifications ensure that I stay on track perfectly? Nope. But they do cause me to make small, consistent changes to my behaviors—changes that better align to the vision of the person who I want to become.

Dissonance can be an incredible force when leveraged correctly.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • How are you responding to dissonance in your life?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
