Monday Morning Motivation – Assertive

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "kind"

Hopefully, the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter along to others who you think would benefit from the content.

Assertive

There is likely going to be a few folks that read this and cringe when I suggest that being assertive is a positive characteristic.  That’s because many, many individuals associate being assertive with being overbearing.  The reality is that they are two vastly different things.

Being assertive requires that:

  • You have an opinion/conviction
  • You believe strongly in that opinion/conviction
  • You are willing to stand up for/voice that opinion/conviction

It differs from being overbearing in that you do NOT attempt to force others to adopt or follow that opinion/conviction.

Being assertive means that you are willing to “take a stand” for what you believe in.  That takes courage (reminder:  I define courage as putting yourself at risk for the betterment of others).  That means that you may not always be in a comfortable place: SHORT TERM when you are assertive.  However, long term, standing up for your opinions/convictions is almost always a good thing.

That brings us to today’s question:

  • Are you willing to be assertive with your opinions and convictions?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning and I wish you all the best for the week.

Curt
