Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "crisis."
Hopefully, the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.
I’m not 100% sure it is true, as I do NOT speak Chinese. However, my understanding that the Chinese word for “crisis” is made up by combining the two symbols that mean “danger” and “opportunity.”
I cannot think of a better way of characterizing the concept of crisis.
Many will see a crisis only through the lens of all of the bad that comes along with it. Essentially, they focus on the “danger” dimension. However, in any crisis, there is always an opportunity that is present as well. It is critical to focus on the potential opportunities that can and will emerge post-danger.
When we balance the near-term danger mitigation and the long-term capture of opportunity, we are able to transform what is often thought of as a “bad” thing into a very good thing. However, we can only get to this point once we accept the reality that crisis is upon us, that we must navigate it, and that our navigation must consider both the long-term and short-term impacts.
Preparing for potential crises a priori is critical to successfully navigating them when they occur.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- What crisis do you need to be preparing for now so that you can best navigate it when it occurs?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
