Monday Morning Motivation – Limitations

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement — along with a good cup of coffee! — to start the day.

Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week.  Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

Limitations

For the next couple of months, I am going to draw motivation for my Monday Morning Motivation from Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art. You can find a summary of this awesome book here. This book is one of my all-time favorites as it takes on the topic of “resistance,” which you might think of as that strange force that makes it difficult to accomplish things in life. Pressfield does an awesome job of describing what resistance is, discussing how to overcome it, and framing it in the context of a larger power.

I plan out my MMM topics multiple weeks or months in advance. When the reminder comes up on my calendar, I open my topic list and start typing. Sometimes the topic brings a smile to my face. Today’s topic (limitations) brought such a smile to my face:

  • “A man’s got to know his limitations.”

I’m guessing that almost everyone reading this will immediately HEAR Clint Eastwood speaking this immortal line in the role of Dirty Harry.

I don’t know that Pressfield had this in mind when he spoke of limitations in the context of resistance, but I do think that Harry Callahan provided some very wise council.

We all have incredible gifts. These allow us to do amazing things. However, we also each have our limitations. These help us to understand where we will struggle; and, therefore, where we will need to ask for help.

It is this self-awareness of his or her limitations that is one of the key defining traits of a professional.

It is this self-awareness that allows us to protect us from ourselves and allows us to serve others.

That brings us to this week’s question – spoken in my best Clint Eastwood voice:

  • A man’s got to know his limitations. Do you?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
