Leadership Lesson 24 – The Importance of the Physical Environment

See What You Can’t See

We all have blind spots — areas in our lives or leadership where something important is right in front of us, yet somehow we just don’t notice it. Others might see it clearly, but for us, it’s invisible.

That’s what makes blind spots so tricky — they’re not about ignorance; they’re about perspective.

Once, I learned this lesson in the most ordinary way. My office used to get unbearably cold in winter. I didn’t mind — I’d throw on an extra sweater and get back to work. It wasn’t until someone spoke up during a meeting that I realized the rest of my team was freezing. Everyone was huddled in jackets, uncomfortable, and distracted. What I had brushed off as “no big deal” had quietly become a real problem for others.

That moment was a wake-up call. Not just about the temperature — but about awareness.

We all operate in our own version of that chilly office. Something that doesn’t bother us might be deeply affecting someone else. Whether it’s a physical space, a process, or even a tone of communication — our blind spots can shape the energy, comfort, and productivity of those around us.

As leaders, the key isn’t to see everything ourselves — it’s to surround ourselves with people who will tell us what we can’t see. People who care enough to speak up and help us adjust before small discomforts turn into big problems.

Your environment — whether minimalist or luxurious — speaks loudly about what your team values. It shapes morale, creativity, and connection. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s alignment. Does your workspace support the kind of energy and focus your team needs to thrive?

Rule #24:

The physical environment in your workplace silently shapes your team’s mindset, motivation, and performance.

Action Step:

Ask three people — one peer, one team member, and one client — what they love most and least about your work environment.
Then, act on what you learn. Small adjustments can lead to powerful shifts in how people feel and perform.
