Monday Morning Motivation – Containment

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "Containment".

Hopefully, the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter along to others who you think would benefit from the content.

Containment

I am not proud to admit that I grew up with quite a temper. Anger was a common friend of mine—not good. I was NOT very good at containing my emotions.

Now mind you, keeping your emotions all bottled up is a VERY bad thing. But allowing them to come out in the form of anger is equally bad.

The key to health—both your own health and the health of your relationships—is to understand and exercise self-regulation. Self-regulation does NOT mean that you ignore or suppress your emotions. It means that you exercise appropriate control and contain them in such a manner that they do not burst forth and cause damage to you and others. Failing to exercise containment is childish, and (I’m embarrassed to admit) I acted like a child for WAY too long.

If you are reading this and can relate to the volatile release of emotions, I would encourage you to focus on the idea of containment. Again, it’s NOT about suppression. It’s about self-regulation.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • Are you practicing containment and self-regulation when it comes to your emotions?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.

Have a great week!
Curt
