Monday Morning Motivation – Skill
Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss skill.
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

On Not Learning an Instrument
Back in sixth grade, every kid in my class got assigned a musical instrument to play. Every kid except me. Music was never my thing, and my instructor was kind enough to leave me out of it.
Some might say that was actually a disservice — that skipping the experience deprived me of something valuable. There's truth to that. I do believe learning an instrument shapes people in real ways, and honestly, I'd love to sit down and play piano today.
But here's the thing: every "no" is a "yes" to something else. While my classmates were logging hours at the piano bench, I was logging hours on complex math problems and on my physical fitness. Both of those became foundational to who I am.
I got good at those two things precisely because I didn't spend time getting good at something else.
That trade-off — time and money, spent here instead of there — is one of the biggest forces shaping how we develop as people. Nobody gets to be great at everything. The real work is figuring out where your gifts actually are, pouring your resources there, and making peace with the things you'll never be great at.
Do that, and it pays off — personally, professionally, and spiritually.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- What unique skill(s) do you possess?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
