Monday Morning Motivation – Suffering

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "suffering."

Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week.  Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

Suffering

At some point, almost everyone finds themselves staring at the same quiet, uncomfortable question: why do we have to suffer at all?

For those who think about life in spiritual terms, that question often deepens—why would a higher power allow pain to exist? If something greater is in control, couldn’t that pain simply be taken away?

It’s a question without an easy answer. But instead of trying to solve it outright, I’ve found it more useful to sit with it—and notice what suffering actually does in our lives.

Over time, a pattern starts to emerge.

Pain has a strange way of forcing movement. It nudges us out of comfort, pushes us to rethink, to adapt, to grow in ways we might never have chosen on our own. Left undisturbed, we tend to stay as we are. But discomfort? That’s what sparks change.

That doesn’t make suffering pleasant—far from it. When you’re in the middle of it, there’s no poetic meaning, no grand lesson neatly revealing itself. It just feels heavy, unfair, and exhausting. In those moments, the idea that something “good” could come from it can feel distant, even irritating.

But with time—sometimes a lot of time—perspective shifts.

Looking back, the hardest phases of life often leave the deepest marks. Not just scars, but also strength, clarity, and a different understanding of who we are. The things that once felt unbearable somehow become the very experiences that shaped us the most.

Would anyone willingly sign up to go through those moments again? Probably not. But there’s often a quiet sense of gratitude that they didn’t break us—that somehow, we made it through and became more than we were before.

Life rarely stays comfortable for long. It moves in cycles—highs and lows, ease and struggle. And while the “ups” are what we naturally chase, it’s often the “downs” that give them meaning. Without contrast, even joy can start to feel ordinary.

Maybe suffering isn’t something to be solved or eliminated completely. Maybe it’s something to be understood—something that, while difficult, plays a role in shaping a fuller, more aware life.

Not because it’s enjoyable.
But because, somehow, it changes us.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • Are you using your suffering to catalyze your growth as an individual?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
