Monday Morning Motivation – Knowledgeable

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "Knowledgeable."

Hopefully, the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter along to others who you think would benefit from the content.

Knowledgeable

I can be a bit of a know-it-all on occasion. I know that. I guard against it. And I still fail! The good news is that I am fairly knowledgeable about a number of topics—including my own stupidity and tendency to obsess over things!

Being knowledgeable is one of the most important things in life. Being knowledgeable does NOT mean that you are an expert on every topic under the sun. Rather, being knowledgeable means that:

  • You know what you know,
  • AND you know what you don’t know,
  • AND you have the wisdom to reach out to others on those topics that you don’t know,
  • AND you have the wisdom to actually LISTEN to those others when you are not competent/trained on a topic.

Unfortunately, it’s WAY too easy to focus on the first of these—knowing what you know.

But therein lays the trap. True knowledge is more about what we do NOT know than what we do know. On topics that we know and understand, we normally do pretty well. These are our areas of expertise or our areas of giftedness. These areas are where we naturally excel.

But when we get “out in front of our skies” and start to believe that our knowledge extends beyond its actual capacity, we can find ourselves making poor decisions that have consequences for both us and those around us. That is why it is so important to surround ourselves with others that COMPLEMENT our knowledge and are there to help us see in those dimensions where we are blind.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • Are you surrounding yourself with others who are more knowledgeable than you?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
