Monday Morning Motivation – Curious

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "curious."

Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week.  Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

Curious

Our oldest (Amanda) was a HUGE fan of Curious George. She loved the stories about how he was always exploring new and exciting things. She loved hearing all of the ways that the explorations led him into unique situations. And she loved that things always turned out well for George and “the man with the yellow hat.”

Unfortunately, I don’t take nearly enough time to go on adventures like George does. I rely too much on my experience and “tried and true” methods to attack the problems I face on a daily basis. I’ve got ALL the fallback excuses that get in the way of me exploring new approaches:

  • The way we currently doing it works.
  • Experience tells me that won’t work.
  • I don’t have time to look at something new.
  • That’s crazy / that will never work.

However, experience HAS taught me that, when I put aside the standard excuses and MAKE the time to explore new approaches, I almost always uncover something new that makes my life better. Sometimes it is just a small tweak to an existing process. However, even these small tweaks lead to better outcomes.

The challenge is getting out of my own way and MAKING time to explore new approaches. To help me in this area, I have BANNED myself from saying, “I don’t have time.” Instead, I force myself to say, “I am unwilling to make time.” This small change has been hugely helpful.

In some instances, not “making” time is a decision that I feel good about. However, in many instances, when I accurately depict my decision as one of NOT allowing myself time, this has shown me that I have my priorities out of alignment.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • Are you making the time to be curious?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
