Monday Morning Motivation – Self-regulation

(Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially)

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement — along with a good cup of coffee! — to start the day.

Self-regulation


Most everyone has heard of the concept of IQ, but considerably fewer have heard of the concept put forward by Daniel Goleman of your “emotional intelligence” or EQ.  For the next few weeks, I’m going to focus on sharing a bit more about the five key dimensions that Goleman identified and how they are important to our emotional wellbeing.


A regulator is a device that goes on a mechanical system that keeps it from going too fast or too slow.

Self-regulation is the ability to identify our emotional state; and, take the necessary actions to ensure that we do not become too “high” or too “low” in our lives.

While self-awareness (last week’s blog post) is the first step to emotional health, it is worthless if we do not possess the ability to regulate our feelings, thoughts, and actions.  Mind you, I’m NOT talking about suppressing ANY of these.  What I am referring to is having the ability to be aware and make a CONSCIOUS choice to regulate our feelings, thoughts and actions.

Regulation is made easier when you ask the “Why Am I” questions:

  • Why am I feeling this way?
  • Why am I thinking this way?
  • Why am I acting this way?

These questions help ensure that we change/modify our feelings, thoughts, and actions.  Once we ask the question, we become more aware, and can transition to conscious choice versus reaction.

And that is a much healthier place to be as an individual.

That brings us to this week’s question

  • Are you willing to ask the tough questions about your feelings, thoughts, and actions and regulate your behaviour accordingly?
