Monday Morning Motivation – Problem

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "problem."

Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week.  Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

Problem

I don’t think there is a word in the English language that gets me more excited than “problem.” You see, I’ve been an engineer since even before I knew what an engineer was!!! Tackling challenging problems—or puzzles —is what fills my tank.

To me it is “normal” to want to face problems and solve them. However, that is not normal. Or should I say engineers are not normal! (DISCLAIMER–All three of our kids are engineers as well, so please have sympathy for my wife who has to deal with all of us).

Solving any problem is very, very challenging. While you can develop frameworks like DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) or “what’s the problem, what’s the causes, what’s the possible solutions, what’s the best solution” to attack the problem in a systematic, data driven, fact-based process, the reality is many problems we face are VERY difficult to solve even when handled in a structured manner.

However, if you don’t adopt a structured approach to attacking the problem you face, the probability that you will be able to solve it is very, very, small. If you look at what I feel are the best schemas to attack a problem, they all begin with the same single step:

  • Define the problem/identify what the problem is.

Interestingly once the problem is defined, the mind amazingly has a habit of generating a multitude of potential solutions. I am NOT going to focus on the solution methodology today. Rather, am going to challenge you to simply DEFINE THE PROBLEM.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • Can you fully define the biggest problem you are now facing in your life?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
