Repulsed by poverty that is not being dealt with by our society, repulse

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "repulse."

Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week.  Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

Repulse

Some words just have a “yucky” feeling. Repulsed is one of these. So why am I writing about it? Because even a “yucky” thing can serve a good purpose.

When I think of being repulsed by something, my mind immediately goes to certain images that I see either on TV or the internet. Images of poverty are the ones that most stick in my mind. How can we as a society be so wealthy and yet still have so much poverty existing in our immediate world?

These images drive me to think about what I can do better. They also cause me to question what I am already doing and whether those actions are improving the situation or allowing the situation to degrade. Unfortunately, too often I draw the conclusion that I am too isolated in my corner of the world—too focused on me and not focused enough on how I can help others.

The acknowledgement and awareness of where and how I can do better is driven by that which repulses me. The undesirable proves to be the fuel for the pursuit of the desirable. Even the “yucky” has value. That’s why I’m OK spending a bit of time with the things that repulse me. They provide fuel for me to change.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • What are you repulsed by, and what are you doing about it?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
