Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day.
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content. Today we discuss "pleasure."
Viktor Frankl was a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps. He is well known for his book Man’s Search for Meaning. It’s a great read and a testimony to how powerful our minds are. A few quotes from Frankl:
- When a man cannot find meaning, he numbs himself with pleasure.
- Man’s main concern is not to gain pleasure or to avoid pain but rather to see a meaning in his life.
- When a person can’t find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure.
Man, those hurt! I’ve spent a ton of time chasing pleasure during my lifetime. Pleasure in things and activities. And certainly, I have had my share of enjoyable experiences. However, each experience ended and required me to pursue the next experience.
Contrast this with the time I spent pouring my efforts into others to make an impact on their lives. The result of these efforts was far from fleeting. The result was the enhancement of relationships and the development of friendships which enrich my life each and every day.
Pleasure is awesome short term. Significance is awesome long term.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- Are you looking for pleasure or significance in your life?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
